Frequently Asked Questions
What is Play Therapy?
Play is essential to human growth, development, learning, and cultivating relationships. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop creativity and problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways to relate to others. Just as adults use words to communicate, children use play. When playing, children express thoughts and feelings that would otherwise remain hidden.
How do I know which session to schedule?
Please book a parent intake appointment first, so we can talk without the child present and make sure that this is the right step for you and your child. Counseling sessions are child-centered where play materials/toys are used to facilitate communication between the child and the therapist. If your child is 10 or older, he/she might benefit from adolescent counseling. Adolescent counseling is more directive and will likely consist of more games and therapeutic activities.
Do you take insurance?
I am a private pay counselor. I can provide a Super bill, upon request, that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
Can you provide a diagnosis?
A diagnosis is often an important step in further developing effective patient treatment plans based on patients’ individual needs. I can provide a diagnosis, if necessary, after an adequate number of sessions with your child.
How often should my child come to therapy?
Consistency is key! You will see more progress and growth with weekly, 50 minute sessions. I recommend at least 16-20 sessions. Sometimes, behaviors can increase and get worse before they get better. I will guide you through the process and help you determine the best plan to meet your child’s needs. The child-centered play therapy model is not a “one size fits all” approach.
How can I be a part of my child’s journey?
You already are! We will meet after every 5 sessions for a free parent consultation. A lack of confidentiality can interfere with the therapeutic relationship; however, I love to communicate with parents and offer suggestions, so they can provide additional support at home.
